breathing space

Fall is such a dramatic season of change. It is not subtle in its attempt to move from summer to winter.

Leaves exploding with color, the wind blows & quite suddenly we’re in sweaters and coats and boots.

wasn’t it hot enough for shorts last week? wasn’t I in a lounge chair in the sun only yesterday?

I wake up in the morning, eyes barely open an hour and I start cleaning out clutter, filling donation bags I hadn’t planned to fill yesterday, yet that is what called me up this morning.

Clearing & making space as we begin, however slowly, reluctantly, to move our lives indoors again.

I do not go quickly or easily. The wind chases me inside long before the cold. I think I am the last to be ready, afraid to blink or look away, knowing it will be gone and gray will descend upon us before we know it.

Being fully present now - breathing deeply - breathing into every cell of my body.

Allow breath to untangle & loosen my grip. I am unable to receive if my fists are closed tight around the moment or the season or the t-shirt I haven’t worn in 8 years. Caught in a grip, hanging on to every little thing…

there is no space to breathe. there is no space for what is making its way to me next.

we start with the physical. at home, it’s the clearing of trunks, drawers, closets of clutter. at yoga, it’s the breath that loosens and allows tight muscles to soften and release.

autumn teaches us the fine art of letting go

as i watch a yellow leaf float across the sky,

I am seeing grace in change, in release.

It cannot be learned or understood from our cell phones & screens, headlines or news. This distraction speeds up time. Time lost. We only experience it in the moments of nature and the sweet design of it’s unfolding.

as a tree finds it’s strength in it’s roots & in it’s core, while branches move gracefully & leaves let go; we find our strength in our roots & our core. In every posture, there is a part that roots us firmly to the ground, and there is one that is ready to let go.

the space between those 2 points is where we breathe in expansion. We make space on an inhale, on an exhale, we soften, release & let go.

in the space, we breathe. we become fully present in our experience of the world.
